1. Fire extinguisher -
make that one or two - preferably one in your bedroom and one in the hallways or in the kitchen or all of the above. You can never be too safe, they are relatively cheap and now they even come with special designs that make them fancy...
2. Radon detector -
the second leading cause of lung cancer is actually radon exposure, so having at least one detector in your common area can prove helpful in the long run...
3. Pristine/Working fridge -
food spoilage sends people to the emergency room every year with severe bouts of diarrhea and nausea, keep your eye on the age and 'health' of your fridge. Keeping it clean regularly couldn't hurt either - especially the ice box. Check with the manufacturer on information on how and when to perform regular maintenance and cleaning.
4. Standing desk (convertible preferred) -
For those with a home office we can't underscore how important a standing desk that can revert to a normal sitting desk is important. The biggest silent killer these days is sedentary lifestyle and prolonged sitting, now equated with severity of smoking. But also, being able to rest on occasion isn't a bad idea either as you weren't meant to stand all the time either. To be a true boss, also consider adding a standing cushion for feet support along with some stress balls and your feet will love you. The best cushions have contours - high and low areas to rest your feet in different positions. Makes a great gift too.
5. Significant other or dog...or okay, cat -
We are social animals, so we encourage you to get out there and make friends, get engaged or married...or pick a pet...its been proven to extend life when you continue to socialize.
6. Exercise machine/equipment -
Not to discourage gym membership, but if you have the space a treadmill, stationary bike or rowing machine can help especially if you are an early riser or tend to have an irregular schedule that way you can always plan for some workout time.
7. Doomsday prep stuff (yeah, like the TV show)
Couldn't hurt to have at least 1-2 weeks of water, food stuffs, canned goods and the ability to heat your home (probably not an issue for SoCal but you know just saying. Survival kits...just read our warnings about you know what...guns and realize you will probably be equally better off bartering and being social with your neighbors for protection...
